Confirmed swine flu case in Piatt County; patient recovering

MONTICELLO — Public health officials have received word of the first confirmed case of swine flu in Piatt County.

David Remmert, administrator of the DeWitt-Piatt Bi-County Health Department, said the Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed the positive results Thursday.

The patient was hospitalized and has been released, he said.

“I know the person was released and is recovering at home,” he added.

Remmert said he has no further information about the age and home community of the patient.

“I think this was bound to happen as the (H1N1) virus gets spread more and more,” he said.

Remmert also said it’s important for everyone to remain vigilant about protecting themselves from the H1N1 virus by covering their mouths when they cough, frequently washing their hands and staying home if they’re sick.

As of Friday afternoon, there are 1,351 confirmed cases of swine flu in Illinois, according to the state public health department.
