Mexican citizens can get documentation help; location changed

URBANA – Local Mexican citizens needing documents like passports or other identification from the Mexican government won't need to drive up to the Mexican consulate in Chicago .

At Urbana Middle School, 1201 S. Vine St., the Mexican consulate in Chicago's mobile unit will help with documentation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The event originally was scheduled at a hotel in Urbana, but was moved due to poor Internet connectivity.

Though advance registration has already closed, some spaces are still available, especially on Friday and Sunday, according to Lucia Maldonado, president of the nonprofit Latino Partnership of Champaign County.

She said, based on registrations so far, she expects 300 to 400 people per day, from as far away as Springfield and Mattoon.

All of the information will be available in Spanish, she said.

Maldonado, who is also the parent-teacher liaison for the Urbana school district, said she's seen the need for Mexican parents to get documentation for their children every year of district registration, when parents need to have proof of identification and residence.

To get documentation, Maldonado said, people need to show proof of Mexican citizenship, like a birth certificate. They also need to show proof of identification, with an ID from either Mexico or the United States.

For minors, a letter from the school with a picture will work, she said, along with proof of residence.

In addition to the consulate, on Saturday the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District will be doing blood pressure screenings at the event, said health district spokeswoman Lori Holmes, adding that information about public health programs will be available.

As well, she said, representatives from the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program will attend to help sign up uninsured women into the program, which offers free mammograms, pap tests and pelvic exams.

Milagros Martinez, a banker at National City in Urbana, will be teaching people about how to build credit, what they need to start a bank account and about "the value of banking within the United States system," said Shaughnessy Rice, office manager at the branch. He said the bank will be at the event all four days.

Maldonado said she will be doing workshops for immigrants.

The hotel, the former Park Inn, is located at 2408 N. Cunningham Ave., U.
