N-G to publish book on World War II
The News-Gazette is planning to release a book about World War II this fall.
The book will be largely based on the special section the newspaper published on the 50th anniversary of D-Day, in 1994.
For that 44-page, 50,000-word section, News-Gazette reporters interviewed more than 175 veterans and others who discussed their experiences at war and at home.
The book will include additional reporting on World War II issues and veterans from East Central Illinois, who were involved in every significant campaign of the war.
At the time of the special section, reporters tape-recorded almost every interview for the section. With the cooperation of the Museum of the Grand Prairie of the Champaign County Forest Preserve District, the newspaper will make those interviews available for listening and download online when the book is published.
Sadly, many of those who were interviewed have died in the intervening years. But the newspaper wants to invite those who are still with us to share in the unveiling of the book, which is planned for Veterans Day at a place still to be determined.
Below is a list of those who were interviewed. If you're on the list, or a family member of someone on the list, we'd love to hear from you. If you're a family member of someone who has died, please accept our condolences, but if you would take the time to drop us a note, we would appreciate knowing.
Also: If you have photos, both from the time of World War II and later -- for instance, a veteran in uniform during the war, and back at home later in life -- we would love to borrow them for possible inclusion in the book. We will return them.
You can send the information and photos via email to mhowie@news-gazette.com or by mail to Mike Howie, News-Gazette, 15 Main St., Champaign, IL 61820. Please send by Aug. 8.
