Plastic surgeons against tax proposal

SPRINGFIELD – The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is fighting a proposed 6 percent tax on elective cosmetic procedures in Illinois, saying it discriminates against women and sets a dangerous precedent.

Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes last month proposed the tax on face-lifts, liposuction, Botox injections and similar procedures as a way to pay for a $1 billion, state-funded stem-cell research initiative he hopes will result in a variety of medical breakthroughs.
