CHAMPAIGN – Champaign native Kevin Causley and friend Leonard Brumfield Jr. rode out Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, gave a helping hand to folks who were stranded, then hiked more than 20 miles through flooded streets and along train tracks to get out of the city – all while keeping their sense of humor.

Causley is the grandson of Hattie Paulk, director of the Champaign school district's Family Information Center. He has lived in New Orleans for a year while working on a master's degree in social work at Southern University of New Orleans. Brumfield has lived there all his life.
