Champaign man faces drug, robbery charges

CHAMPAIGN – A Champaign man is accused in separate cases of having drugs for sale and robbing a man at gunpoint.

Justin Battle, 24, who listed an address in the 500 block of East Clark Street, was arraigned and pleaded innocent Monday to charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and armed robbery.

Champaign police arrested Battle after executing a search warrant in the 2800 block of West Kirby Avenue Friday and finding a bag containing 7 grams of cocaine in a bedroom, according to Assistant State's Attorney Dan Clifton.

Battle also was arrested on a warrant for an earlier armed robbery in Champaign, according to Clifton.

According to Champaign police, a Champaign man was robbed at gunpoint in the first block of Main Street in downtown Champaign on Feb. 26. The man reported that he was confronted by two men, including Battle, whom he recognized, police said.

One of the men pulled out a gun and the other man searched his pockets, taking a wallet and cash.

Battle also has another pending court case in which he is accused of aggravated battery in a public place that occured May 5, 2005, according to court records.

He failed to appear at a hearing in that case in July and a warrant for his arrest was issued.

Battle has a prior robbery conviction and was sentenced in 2003 to seven years in prison, according to court records.
