Two found dead in Champaign home

CHAMPAIGN – Autopsies are scheduled this afternoon in Bloomington for two people found dead Tuesday night in a southwest Champaign home.

"We are treating it as a homicide at this point," said Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup.

When friends called in to check on the residents of 1702 Scottsdale Drive on Tuesday evening, they found an open door, according to Champaign Police Lt. Holly Nearing.

Nearing said the friends "called the police to check" on the situation at 7:20 p.m.

"Officers went through and found an apparent crime scene," Nearing said.

"Champaign police detectives and crime scene unit are processing the crime scene," she said just after 11 p.m. "We anticipate that we'll be out here many more hours."

Champaign Police Lt. Joe Gallo said officers found the two victims inside the house.

Northrup said he pronounced one man and one woman dead at the scene at 8:45 p.m. He said the identities of the two are being withheld until the next of kin have been notified.

According to the Champaign County supervisor of assessments' Web site, the house is owned by Jeremiah J. and Sue Haigh.

Gallo said Champaign police are asking any persons with information to call the police department at 351-4545.

Persons wishing to remain anonymous may call Crimestoppers at 373-TIPS. Crimestoppers will pay a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrests of a person or persons responsible for the crime.
