Driving to work one day last winter, Richard Minick Jr. spotted the Cozy's frozen custard shop standing closed for the season. And it gave him an idea.
Why waste the building for part of the year, he figured, when it could become a second location for the Campustown restaurant called Junior's that he operates with his father, Rick Minick?
Cozy's owner Eric Faulkner says he liked the idea of taking in Junior's as a tenant – and doing some business himself in the winter months – so now his frozen custard shop at 1511 W. Springfield Ave., C, is a year-round Cozy's and Junior's.
Junior's, which is also keeping its original shop open at 502 E. John St., serves hamburgers, fries, milkshakes, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, veggie burgers and some "interesting sides," Richard Minick Jr. said.
Sides include fried pickles, fried macaroni and cheese, Texas toothpicks (slices of jalapeno peppers and onions that are breaded and fried) and bomber fries – loaded with onions, cheese sauce, sour cream, bacon bits and jalapeno peppers, he said.
More food news
A new Chinese restaurant will open at the Savoy Plaza later this year, probably in November, according to the shopping center's owner, Regency Properties.
It will be a Mandarin Wok, owned by Ji Gao Yang, who also operates a Mandarin Wok on East Green Street in Campustown.
The Savoy restaurant will be 3,990 square feet and offer dine-in and carryout service. It will take up some of the remaining space in the old Festival Foods grocery store, where Friar Tuck liquor store is also located, according to Julie Clayton with Regency.
Mandarin Wok is joining a new Schnucks grocery store and Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant also on the way, all part of a major remodeling and expansion of the plaza now in progress.
Moving/remodeling at mall
Three stores at Champaign's Market Place Mall are going to get new looks, and one of them will also be moving, according to Nora Dukowitz, the mall's marketing manager.
– Bath & Bodyworks will move to a larger spot in the old Disney store. It will remain in its current location until the new store is ready.
– Victoria's Secret is remodeling at its current location.
– American Eagle is remodeling and expanding to take in a vacant space next door. The store is set to move soon to a temporary location in the J.C. Penney wing, where it will remain until the work is completed.
Open houses planned
Matzner Chiropractic: A Creating Wellness Center will hold a series of open houses at its new, larger building at 1712 S. Duncan Road, C.
Matzner has expanded from a traditional chiropractic practice to a wellness program to include the physical, biochemical and psychological dimensions of health, said the center's marketing director, Cynthia Halverson.
The Creating Wellness system, used at 100 chiropractic centers internationally, is a chiropractor-led, 15-week customized wellness program, she said.
The open houses will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on four Tuesdays, with the first – catering to patients – set for this Tuesday. Others will be Aug. 15 for neighbors, Sept. 12 for professionals and Sept. 19 for corporate clients.
