URBANA – A man was arrested for robbery as he was released Tuesday from a hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound after shooting himself, according to Urbana police.
Bruce Jarrett, 19, who listed an address in the 1800 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, Urbana, was arrested for armed robbery and other charges, according to Sgt. Bryant Seraphin.
Jarrett was arraigned and pleaded innocent Wednesday to a felony armed robbery charge. His bond was set at $75,000 and he is due to return to court for a preliminary hearing Oct. 11.
Seraphin said a 19-year-old Urbana man reported he was robbed by a man who pointed a gun and demanded money at an apartment complex in the 1800 block of South Cottage Grove about 12:45 p.m. Monday.
Despite attempts by the robber to disguise his identity, the Urbana man recognized the robber as Jarrett, who lived in the same apartment complex and was an acquaintance, Seraphin said.
Police were unable to locate Jarrett initially, but learned that he had gone to a hospital for a gunshot wound shortly after 1 p.m. Monday. He told Champaign and Urbana police that he had been shot by a stranger who tried to rob him in a parking lot of a Champaign fast food restaurant.
Investigation showed that Jarrett had shot himself in the leg while in his apartment and called friends for a ride to the hospital, according to police.
"He was probably nervous or excited and his gun-handling skills are unknown," Seraphin said. "His injury was nonlife threatening."
