City council approves tobacco ban for youths
CHAMPAIGN – The Champaign City Council couldn't agree to ban smoking in restaurants or bars last fall. But council members found something Tuesday night they could mostly agree on – that youths under age 18 shouldn't be allowed to possess tobacco products.
Council members voted 8-1 to make it an ordinance violation for those under 18 to possess tobacco and making violators subject to a fine of $145.
