UI's quake center will receive $250,000 grant

SPRINGFIELD – The governor's office is expected to announce a $250,000 grant today to help scientists at the University of Illinois study the potential impacts of a catastrophic earthquake in the state.

"Having worked in recovery from a massive earthquake, I know first-hand that we need to understand the personal and economic effects of such a catastrophe," said a statement from the governor's deputy chief of staff for safety, Jill Morgenthaler, a colonel in the Army Reserve who worked on recovery in the 1989 earthquake in San Francisco. "This study will assist us in saving lives and lessening the impact of an earthquake."
