RURAL DEWEY – A Fisher man involved in a single-vehicle crash Friday north of Dewey drowned, according to Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup.
Carl Brocksmith, 79, of Fisher was pronounced dead at 2:37 p.m. Friday at the scene of the crash on Champaign County Road 3300 N just west of 900 E in East Bend Township, Northrup said.
Preliminary results from an autopsy in Bloomington Saturday showed Mr. Brocksmith drowned, Northrup said.
"He was submerged as a result of the accident," he said.
Champaign County Sgt. Curt Apperson said a preliminary investigation Friday showed Mr. Brocksmith was driving a truck west on Champaign County Road 3300 N northeast of Fisher about 1:35 p.m. Friday.
The truck went off the road to the north and crashed through a guard rail at a bridge on County Road 3300 N, Apperson said.
The accident investigation by the sheriff's office and the coroner's office is continuing. Northrup said toxicology results are pending and an inquest will be conducted at a later date.
