URBANA – Willis A. Miller, 52, died at 6:33 p.m. Friday at Carle Foundation Hospital in the intensive care unit, said Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup.
The rural Arthur man had been driving a horse and buggy at about 8:35 a.m. Wednesday when it was hit from behind by a sport utility vehicle driven by Timothy W. Scheffer, 28, of Atwood.
"The cause of death is traumatic head injury," Northrup said. He said that because the cause is known, there will not be an autopsy.
Mr. Willis had been driving south on the Arthur-Atwood Road, about 2 1/2 miles south of U.S. 36, when his buggy was hit, Moultrie County sheriff's Deputy Jan Braden said Wednesday.
He said Thursday that fog was heavy at the time and that Scheffer indicated "that he didn't see the buggy until he was right on top of him."
Accompanying Scheffer in the car was his 11-month-old son. Neither was injured, though the vehicle sustained damage.
Mr. Miller's horse, which was critically injured, had to be put down after the accident.
