DANVILLE – Irelyn Ferrill, one of the Ferrill Five, is home with her brothers and sisters, recovering after undergoing heart surgery on Friday.
A little more than a week after Pete and Jenny Ferrill of Danville came home from Children's Hospital in St. Louis with their quintuplets, one of the quints had to return to St. Louis on Friday for surgery.
Jenny Ferrill said the left ventricle of Irelyn's heart was enlarged, so she underwent surgery to repair the problem. Irelyn was released Saturday afternoon and was home Sunday doing well, although in some pain, Jenny Ferrill said.
"She's a trouper," Jenny said.
The quintuplets were born premature on Dec. 21 and after several weeks in the hospital were released, one-by-one, to finally go home with their parents. They brought all five babies, three boys and two girls, home together on Feb. 27. Irelyn was the last baby to be released by doctors in St. Louis.
Jenny Ferrill said doctors were aware of the situation with Irelyn's heart but were hoping to wait until she was six months old to address it. But last week, Irelyn stopped breathing while eating and turned blue, so doctors decided the situation must be dealt with now through surgery, she said.
Irelyn will continue to visit a heart specialist now, Jenny Ferrill said, but she said she's doing well.
