Educator named new principal at Centennial

CHAMPAIGN – Ronald Bode of Lake Villa will be the new principal at Centennial High School.

At a special meeting Monday at Central High School, school board members said Bode will replace Judy Wiegand as principal July 1. Wiegand was earlier named director of secondary curriculum for the district.

Bode, who will earn $111,000, is currently assistant principal at Lakes Community High School at Lake Villa.

When Bode visited Champaign to talk to community members about his candidacy, he said he uses four rules as guidelines for youngsters in his schools.

"We must respect each other at all times," he said at a community forum."We don't dress or act in a distracting manner. If an adult tells a student to do something, he does it. And nobody has the right to interfere with others' ability to learn."

He told teachers he wants to help them define what they want to accomplish in their leadership position. "It has to be a shared vision or we don't go anywhere," Bode said.

And he suggested that he'll be an open-minded administrator. "I don't see myself as the solution to every problem," Bode said. "I see myself as the start of the solution."

Bode received his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa and earned a master's degree amd did additional postgraduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He's held administrative positions at several middle schools and high schools.

In other business Monday, the board approved Joe Davis' suggestion that the district apply for a Safe Schools grant with the Urbana school district, the cities of Champaign and Urbana and the Regional Planning Commission. Davis, a part-time administrator, said the grant would be administered by the cities.

"We'll fix sidewalks, we're interested in electronic signs so drivers can see how fast they're going, and we're looking at signs and bike routes," he said. "One of our schools has no sidewalks. These are the kinds of things this new grant can do."

Davis said the district is asking principals to make suggestions about public infra-structure improvements.
