Stronger draft gets tentative OK
URBANA – A beefed-up proposal to create a civilian police review board in Urbana is headed for a final vote on Aug. 6.
Urbana City Council members, in a 5-2 voice vote, gave their tentative approval to a draft ordinance creating the board, which would review citizen complaints against city police officers. The proposal included 23 new provisions, including one that would give the seven-member board the power to subpoena witnesses, case-specific records, evidence and to take testimony.
