Mahomet median sparks safety concerns
MAHOMET – From the tall windows at Mahomet's Villa Caffe, owner Marisa Anstey said she's seen two traffic accidents and "a lot of close calls" at the intersection of Commercial Drive and U.S. 150 on Mahomet's east side.
The traffic problems are caused by what Anstey calls a "bizarre median," actually a triangular "hammerhead" that prevents left turns into and out of Commercial Drive. The intersection isn't posted with right-turn-only signs, so drivers try to turn left, sometimes hitting the hammerhead and risking accidents.
