METCAD almost completely digital for 911 dispatches
Until recently, campus police officers were unable to talk to each other by radio from the basement of some buildings.
When they needed to talk to other police or emergency response agencies, they sometimes couldn't get a signal, according to University of Illinois police Lt. Skip Frost. Another problem was that the campus police share radio frequency with Urbana police and Champaign County sheriff's deputies and the old radios would not be able to stop officers from talking at the same time, he said.
