Deadbeat parents can now receive the boot

SPRINGFIELD – Child support deadbeats will have a tougher time getting around, under legislation Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed on Tuesday.

The new law allows municipalities to use the Denver boot to immobilize the vehicles of certain deadbeat parents and permits the state to suspend their drivers' licenses administratively, avoiding the cost and delay of obtaining a suspension through the court system. According to the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, several other states have successfully collected millions in child support through such programs.
