UI professor's discoveries 30 years ago changed our view of life
By thinking small, University of Illinois Professor Carl Woese generated big changes in the way we think about biology and the origins of life.
On Saturday, 30 years to the day after The New York Times reported that a form of life predating higher organisms was discovered by scientists at the UI led by Woese, the university will kick off a two-day symposium marking the anniversary of the discovery. It also will be commemorated with a historical marker on campus.
