School bus hits van; 2 adults injured

CADWELL – Two adults but no kids were injured in an accident involving a minivan and a school bus in eastern Moultrie County on Friday.

A release from the Illinois State Police at Pesotum said the accident happened at 7:28 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Moultrie County roads 1800N and 1600E.

The release said Johnnie Cornwell, 55, of Arthur, was driving the bus with six students ranging in age from 4 to 13 about a mile south of Cadwell. Cornwell was northbound on County Road 1600E approaching the intersection with 1800N when an eastbound van driven by Nancy Craig, 42, of Sullivan, failed to stop and was hit by the front of the bus.

Craig's van hit a utility pole before coming to rest. The bus rolled onto its right side.

Craig was taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center near Mattoon. Her condition was not released. Cornwell was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he was listed in fair condition Saturday. Craig was issued a ticket for failure to yield at an intersection.
