Community generous with donations by the pounds

CHAMPAIGN – If you noticed more traffic than usual in downtown Champaign on Wednesday, the reason was probably generosity.

Scores of citizens stopped by The News-Gazette's downtown office to drop off food donations on the day before Thanksgiving.

Newspaper staffers ran the curbside collection, part of an effort by the newspaper and radio stations WDWS and WHMS, to benefit senior citizens via the Stevick Center Food for Seniors program.

"I never fail to be impressed by the willingness of our communities to help those who need a little help," said News-Gazette Publisher John Foreman. "This outpouring was nothing short of overwhelming.

"Thousands of pounds of food were donated to and by the staffs of the newspaper and radio stations."

Photos of donors are online at www.news-gazette.com.
