Hearing set for former coach accused of taping UI gymnast

URBANA – A pretrial hearing is scheduled in February for a former University of Illinois gymnastics coach accused of videotaping a gymnast in a locker room on campus without the man's knowledge.

Jon Valdez, 40, of the 1900 block of Newport Drive, Urbana, was arraigned Friday on a felony charge of unauthorized videotaping.

Valdez was allowed to remain free on his own recognizance. He was given permission to travel to California for a visit with family.

The pretrial hearing is scheduled for Feb. 10.

If convicted of the Class 4 felony, Valdez faces penalties ranging from probation to one to three years in prison.

Valdez is accused of recording video of another man on Sept. 25 without the man's consent in a locker room at Kenney Gym.

The man discovered the camera in a locker and reported it to Valdez, who allegedly claimed to have no knowledge of it and said he would report it to police. When learning that Valdez had not reported the finding to police, the man did so himself.

Police were able to recover the video, which had been deleted.

Valdez resigned from the university Oct. 17.
