URBANA – Saying they were doing it to save the Historic Lincoln Hotel as a viable business, the city council voted Monday night to reject a historic-landmark designation for the 85-year-old downtown hotel.

Council members voted 4-1 against landmark status. They were heeding a warning from Fred Rotermund, vice president of Global Hotel Management of Normal, the hotel's owner, who said attracting a major hotel brand would be much more difficult with a landmark designation.
