DANVILLE – When Joseph Roberson smelled smoke in his upstairs apartment building late Monday afternoon, he thought one of the downstairs tenants was cooking food and had burned it.

Roberson left the apartment and went to his aunt's house down the alley. But soon a friend from the neighborhood tracked Roberson down to tell him the building was on fire.

No one, including two downstairs tenants who were home, was injured in the blaze, said Lt. Richard Gibson of the Danville Fire Department. But it significantly damaged the building at 942 N. Hazel St., leaving Roberson and five other people homeless.
