TUSCOLA – The Fourth of July may celebrate America, but a new event for Tuscola's celebration this year highlights Scottish and Celtic heritage – and showcases feats of remarkable strength.

It's the first year for the Highland Games at Tuscola's Ervin Park, but the games have several local connections and contestants. Athletes will twirl and hurl hefty weights – hammers, stones and even sanded-down tree trunks – while wearing kilts. The games start at noon July 4 and will take place on the park's east side, near the softball diamonds.
