What does Common Ground carry?

Groceries, meat, produce, dairy products, frozen foods, bulk items, health and beauty products. Generally, the emphasis is on locally made, all-natural, "fair trade" products, and whenever possible, organic products.

How does the cooperative work?

The grocery store is cooperatively owned by its 1,600 members and overseen by a six-member board of directors. Formed in November 1974, it operates at 610 E. Springfield Ave., C, and is scheduled to move to Lincoln Square Village in mid-August.

Can anyone shop at Common Ground?

Yes, when the new store opens, it will be open to the general public, as well as to members.

Do I have to pay cash?

No, the co-op accepts cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and food stamps.

What do you have to do to be a member?

Members must make a one-time, refundable $60 equity investment in the cooperative. As long as they continue to patronize the store, they remain active members and have a vote in its governance. There are no annual fees.

Do members have to work there?

There's no obligation for members to work at the co-op, but if they do, they can reap additional savings of 5 percent to 15 percent, general manager Jacqueline Hannah said.

What's the advantage of being a member?

Advantages include: members-only weekly specials, half-price fees for educational classes and a member-appreciation day that features discounts and gift bags.
