If the gubernatorial impeachment drama in Springfield plays itself out, Illinois politics will face perhaps its greatest irony of all time: The man who has made a career campaigning against the political bosses and run against the state's power structure will become the boss.
Pat Quinn, perpetually outraged, cantankerous and crusading for 30 years, will be the governor of Illinois. He will reign over the powerful he has railed against for taking pay raises, for not adopting term limits, for failing to enact ethics reforms, for not standing up to the utility companies.
