Champaign County seeks better ways to help young offenders

URBANA – Urbana police get called about five times a month to deal with youths in trouble, who then, along with their parents, meet with juvenile officers.

They are called "station adjustments" – a system designed to keep youths with first-time, minor offenses out of the criminal system.

Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz said local authorities are talking about ways to improve the system. One idea being discussed is a countywide center for assessing and meeting the needs of juvenile criminals and their families.
