Water safety skit part of safety fair

URBANA – Want to teach your kids more about water safety?

The Champaign Fire Department will be offering its "Hans and Swampy Present Water Safety 101" live skit four times Saturday (June 6) at the Carle Foundation Hospital/Safe Kids Champaign County Playing it Safe event.

This large safety fair is being held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Champaign County Fairgrounds. Admission and all activities are free.

The water safety play will be offered at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. near the grandstand, said Dena Schumacher, community education officer for the fire department.

Firefighters have made drowning prevention a safety focus not only to help keep kids safe around pools but also to help them make safety a priority when they go on vacation to other areas of the country with major water features, Schumacher said.

The safety fair will include nearly 50 interactive learning stations and exhibits focusing on safety for the entire family, a puppet show, storyteller, bicycle inspections, a child identification package for parents and concessions. The first 1,500 people getting into the lunch line starting at 11 a.m. will get a free hot dog and chips.

A Spanish translation station with an interpreter will also be offered.
