Cities feel fallout after stock market slams pension assets
CHAMPAIGN – Last year's stock market decline dealt a major blow to the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund's pension assets. And local governments across Illinois could wind up paying the price for years to come.
The IMRF saw its pension assets fall 24.8 percent during 2008, from $24.2 billion to $18.1 billion.
