Researcher studied bears for insights into human health
There once were 15 bears who lived near Seymour. A kindly doctor studied them for almost three decades, in hopes of finding treatments for osteoporosis and kidney disease.
The bears were named U.P. and Caruso, or just given numbers, and the doctor was Ralph Nelson, who headed the Carle Foundation's research division, and taught at the University of Illinois. He first researched bears at Mayo Clinic.
