Carle Auxiliary marks 50 years of serving hospital community
URBANA – When he thinks about everything the members of the Carle Foundation Hospital Auxiliary do every day, Dr. James Leonard can't help but call them angels of mercy.
These volunteers wearing cheery pink smocks and red vests deliver roses, balloons and patient mail throughout the hospital.
They dispense smiles and comforting words.
They staff the information desks, run the gift shop, transport the patients and tend to the families staying at Carle's guest house.
"I think about all the people and families who have been touched, who have been welcomed to our facility," marvels Leonard, the Carle Foundation's CEO. "The auxiliary is really a reflection of our community, and how we take care of our own."
Marking its 50th anniversary this month, the Carle Auxiliary was founded by two Carle doctors' wives, Jean Mussey and Elizabeth Rowe, and chartered in 1959.
