Health rule has farmers' market vendors scrambling
CHAMPAIGN – Paula Erwin and her husband, Dan, have been selling baked goods at Market at the Square in Urbana for nearly 20 years. It's been a team effort. Dan makes yeast breads and pies; Paula bakes cookies, muffins and quick breads.
But the Erwins, along with several other vendors, are now scrambling to find a commercial kitchen they can use to produce their baked goods. That's because of a recent decision by the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District to prohibit the sale of home-baked goods at Urbana's Market at the Square and other county farmer's markets.
