County committee puts gambling issue on hold
URBANA – Members of the Champaign County Board's policy committee plan to wait until November before acting on a proposal to bar the operation of video-gaming machines in unincorporated areas of the county.
A number of county boards and municipalities around the state already have decided to prohibit video gaming in their jurisdictions, giving up the promise of tax revenue from each bet. In Champaign County, that could be about $50,000, according to County Administrator Deb Busey. The projection is based on an estimate of $1,000 in tax revenue from each machine in the county.
