URBANA – AARP Tax Aide will provide free tax assistance and tax-return preparation for seniors and low- to moderate-income taxpayers at sites in Urbana, Rantoul and Mahomet this year.
Volunteers are trained to help file Internal Revenue Service Form 1040 and basic schedules, as well as Illinois Form IL-1040. Taxpayers with more complex returns should seek assistance elsewhere.
Walk-in service will be available at Urbana's Lincoln Square Village from Jan. 25 to April 15. The office is in the mall's west corridor. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
Service will be available Mondays and Wednesdays at the Rantoul Recreation Center, beginning Feb. 1. To schedule an appointment there, call 893-0461. Appointments will also be available Saturday mornings at the Rantoul Public Library and can be scheduled by calling 893-3955.
Service will also be available at the Mahomet Public Library, and appointments can be scheduled by calling 586-2611.
AARP Tax-Aide is a national program that has been offered in Champaign County for more than 10 years. Many taxpayers return for assistance each year, according to Don Wendel, local coordinator for the program.
