Woman awaiting drunken-driving trial faces theft charges

CHAMPAIGN – A Champaign woman awaiting trial on charges accusing her of causing the death of another woman in a drunken-driving crash in January was arrested Thursday on charges of stealing prescription medication from a local clinic.

A Champaign police report said Amanda Ennis, 31, who listed an address in the 2100 block of Madison Court, was arrested on charges of theft under $300 after a report that she stole Xylocaine from the Carle Clinic at 1701 W. Curtis Road, C.

State's Attorney Julia Rietz said Saturday that she had not yet seen the report, but a correctional officer at the Champaign County Jail confirmed that Ennis was brought in Thursday.

She is currently charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana in connection with the Jan. 22 death of Susan Costello, 58, of Champaign.

Mrs. Costello died from injuries after being struck as she crossed Kirby Avenue near Hessel Park in Champaign. Court records indicate Ennis had a blood-alcohol level of 0.12 percent, more than the 0.08 percent required for an Illinois motorist to be presumed intoxicated.

Ennis appeared in Judge Richard Klaus' court Friday in her DUI case. It was continued until April 30.
