Bus driver charged with stealing from passenger

CHAMPAIGN — A Watseka man was arrested Tuesday for theft over $300 after he allegedly stole money from one of his patrons.

Thomas Perez, 52, a driver for LEX Express, was arrested about 8:30 a.m.

Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said officers were sent to the loading zone for the bus service in the 600 block of South Wright Street where a 22-year-old woman reported that Perez stole money and an electronic item from her bag while she slept.

She told police that after boarding, she sat directly behind the driver, putting her backpack, containing her money, between the two front seats as he instructed her.

The woman also told police she was awakened by the driver touching her pants pocket. Once she arrived in Champaign, she reached in her backpack and noticed her cash missing.

She and two other passengers remained in the bus until police arrived.
