URBANA – If you're looking for opportunity over the next 25 years, look to energy technology.
That field is poised to succeed information technology as the next big economic driver, said Thomas Siebel, the founder of Siebel Systems.
Siebel, now a philanthropist, made his fortune from information technology, but he told University of Illinois students Friday that boom years for that field are over.
Now we're entering an era of explosive population growth, aging populations, greater demand for health care and more expensive energy, he said.
The biggest market opportunities in the next decades will relate to food, health care and energy, Siebel said.
