CHAMPAIGN – The Champaign-Urbana Schools Foundation will recognize two graduates of the Champaign and Urbana school districts next week.
The schools foundation will hold its sixth Distinguished Alumni Luncheon on Friday. The luncheon will honor Dr. Scott Anderson, a member of the Class of 1977 from Champaign's Central High School, and Stephen Van Arsdell, a member of the Class of 1968 from Urbana High School.
Anderson is a Champaign dentist. He served as a Champaign school board member for 12 years, and as school board president for five years. He also served as a mentor in the C-U One-to-One Mentoring Program for six years.
Anderson provides free dental services to the Donated Dental Services Program, Champaign County Health Care Consumer's Dental Referral Program, Smile Healthy, low-income students in the Champaign school district, Champaign Terrace Group Home, and the Center for Women in Transition. He also does volunteer work in Malawi.
His three children graduated from Centennial High School. Anderson received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Vanderbilt University and he got his DDS at the University of Chicago School of Dentistry. He has had a private dental practice in Champaign since 1985.
Steve Van Arsdell is deputy chief executive officer with the accounting and consulting firm Deloitte, LLP. He serves on the business advisory council for the University of Illinois College of Business, and he is a member of the college's alumni board of directors.
Van Arsdell has been active in The Conservation Foundation for 20 years. He's served on the board of trustees for more than 15 years, and as chair of the board for five years. Van Arsdell has also served on the boards of the Illinois Cancer Council, Literacy Volunteers of America-Illinois, and the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois.
Van Arsdell and his wife, Liz, live in Naperville and have six children.
He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Illinois and a medical degree from Northwestern University's College of Medicine.
Those honored as distinguished alumni are nominated by fellow professionals, friends, family, or local citizens. They must have graduated from a Champaign or Urbana public high school at least 10 years before they are honored, and demonstrate distinguished contributions to society.
The Distinguished Alumni Luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the I Hotel and Conference Center. For tickets or additional information, go online or call 398-2873. Tickets will not be available at the door. They must be purchased in advance.
