Champaign County wants clarification on Provena tax money

URBANA – Champaign County Treasurer Dan Welch is asking a Champaign County judge to end the doubt that continues to swirl around millions of dollars in property tax payments made by Provena Covenant Medical Center to local governments.

As long as the Urbana hospital continues to challenge its tax-exempt status for certain years, local governments can't feel free to spend the tax payments the hospital has made, he said.

"We just want some clarification," Welch said.

The motion filed on behalf of Welch by local attorney Jerry Lyke on Tuesday asks a judge to declare:

– That Covenant is not tax-exempt and owes real estate taxes for the years 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009, and for 2004 on certain parcels.

– That the county treasurer won't have to refund real estate taxes paid to him for those years.
