Johnson named chair of House subcommittee

U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson, R-Urbana, has been appointed chair of the rural development subcommittee of the House Agriculture Committee for the 112th Congress beginning next year.

"It's a subcommittee assignment for areas that directly affect central Illinois," said Johnson's spokesman, Phil Bloomer.

The subcommittee deals with issues such as rural development programs, agriculture research (including biotechnology), foreign agriculture aid, trade promotion and family farming matters.

Johnson is the third-ranking member on the House agriculture committee and has been involved in the committee for 10 years, according to Bloomer.

"Tim's very excited about it," he said.

The chairman-elect of the agriculture committee is Rep. Frank Lucas, a Republican from Oklahoma.

Johnson will also serve on the transportation committee, as he has since he was first elected to Congress.
