IHSA football finals to move from UI every other year

Starting in 2013, the IHSA will need a new venue in odd numbered years for the state football finals.

With an expanded Big Ten starting this year, Illinois will be playing home games on Thanksgiving weekend every other year starting in 2013.  That will mean the state football finals will need to be moved out of Memorial Stadium in those years. (Illinois is on the road on Thanksgiving weekend this fall and again in 2012.)

"We are certainly disappointed, but very understanding," IHSA executive director Marty Hickman said. "The University of Illinois has given us a world-class facility in Memorial Stadium to contest our state finals and the entire Champaign-Urbana community has offered a first-class atmosphere for the competing schools and fans. We look forward to returning the IHSA Football State Finals to Memorial Stadium every other year and will begin to investigate other potential sites to host the finals in the years that the University of Illinois is unable to host."
