Marathon seeks 250 course volunteers

The Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon needs 250 more course volunteers for this year’s race.

The races cannot happen without enough volunteers on the course, said Jan Seeley and Mike Lindemann, co-directors of the marathon.

"We won’t be able to have the race if we don’t get these positions filled," Seeley said.

The course volunteers are posted at intersections along the course to ensure the safety of runners during the race.

The race officials work with local law enforcement to provide security. There will be 55 police officers at key locations along the course, Seeley said, but the police departments require the race to provide a certain number of volunteers at specific locations as well for all the weekend’s races.

The 5K will be run the evening of April 29, and the marathon, half-marathon, relay, 10K and youth run are scheduled for April 30.

The training for course volunteers begins April 7.

"We want to get (the positions) filled this week so we can go into the training knowing we’ve got all our people," Seeley said.
