Marathon still needs more than 100 volunteers

CHAMPAIGN The Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon needs more course team volunteers for this year's races, which are set for April 29-30.

Race co-director Jan Seeley said organizers need a total of 500 volunteers to help monitor locations along the route for potential traffic- or pedestrian-related issues, to ensure that runners stay on the right course and to provide encouragement and support to the runners.

"The police are requiring that every course team position be filled," Seeley said. "We could do the pasta feed or hand out water with fewer volunteers, but the course part of the deal has to be 100 percent staffed."

As of Sunday afternoon, the race still needed an additional 109 course team volunteers to reach the goal of a minimum of 500 volunteers, according to Seeley.

Those who sign up to be course team volunteers can choose a favorite location along the course and will take part in a one-hour training session prior to the event.

"The course team people get to pick the location they want to be at," Seeley said.

People can choose to volunteer on only one of the two days if they prefer, Seeley said.

For example, Seeley said people running in the 5K can volunteer to be a course team volunteer Saturday, and those running in the 10K, half-marathon or marathon on Saturday can volunteer to be a course team volunteer for Friday.

Seeley said the volunteers will receive a Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon T-shirt and a drawstring backpack.

Training will be provided prior to the race. Course team volunteers must be 16 years or older, unless accompanied by an adult.

Those interested in volunteering in the Champaign part of the route can attend a training session from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 7, 14 or 19 at St. John's Church, 509 S. Mattis Ave., C.

People interested in volunteering in the Urbana part of the route can attend a training session from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 11 or 8 to 9 p.m. April 12 at Stone Creek Church, 2502 S. Race St., U, or from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 18 at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center, 601 S. Lincoln Ave, U.

You can sign up to volunteer by going to http://www.illinoismarathon.com and clicking on the volunteer link or calling the hotline at 552-8325.
