Shots fired at Champaign mall

UPDATED 7:45 p.m.

CHAMPAIGN – At least two people were injured in a shooting outside Market Place Mall in Champaign late Sunday afternoon.

Champaign police Chief R.T. Finney said officers were called to the west side of the mall at 4:47 p.m. after receiving a report of multiple shots fired there.

“When they got there, they found two individuals and one was shooting at the other,” Finney said, “and (police) returned fire.”

Police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said two officers shot the shooter.

Finney said both of the people who were injured were taken away by ambulance.

“We have no motive for the shooting,” Finney said.

Finney said police have taken three or four other people into custody.

“We know that more than two people were involved in this,” Finney said. “Our best guess is we have the people who are responsible in custody or at the hospital.”

No officers were injured and there is no evidence that any shots were fired inside the mall, police said.

Finney said the two people in the hospital included the man shot by police and one other victim.

He said the mall was closed while police investigated. Shoppers had to leave their cars in the parking lot while police searched for bullet holes or other evidence.

Police from at least four agencies -- Champaign, Urbana, state police and sheriff's office -- responded to the call.
