Marching Illini director leaving UI

The director of the Marching Illini will leave May 15 to take a new job as chairman of the Department of Music at Elmhurst College.

Asssistant Band Director Peter Griffin accepted the job on Saturday, according to Professor Robert Rumbelow, director of UI bands.

A committee is working to find a visiting faculty member who can take over Griffin’s duties in time to prepare for the Marching Illini’s fall performance season. It’s too late to do a national search, Rumbelow said Tuesday morning.

“It’s a real shock, but it’s also a really nice professional move for him and his family. We wish he would stay,” Rumbelow said.

Griffin, a UI alumnus, became assistant director of bands in 1994 after holding a similar job at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
