Part of Springfield Avenue in Urbana to be closed starting Wednesday

URBANA — A portion of Springfield Avenue in Urbana will be closed beginning Wednesday for street reconstruction.

Springfield Avenue will be closed from west of McCullough Street to just east of Birch Street starting at 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Workers will remove the existing pavement, curb and gutters, driveway approaches and sidewalk ramps and install new concrete pavement, new curbs and gutters, sidewalks and street lighting.

That portion of the street is expected to re-open by 5 p.m. Aug. 2, weather permitting.

A detour route will direct westbound Springfield Avenue traffic onto Main Street, then south on Coler Avenue back to Springfield.

Eastbound Springfield Avenue traffic will be detoured south on Coler, east on Elm Street and north on Cedar Street back to Springfield.

A second stage of the project will involve closing Springfield Avenue from east of Birch Street to Cedar Street from Aug. 3 to Aug. 16.
