Man charged with theft of air conditioners

URBANA — A homeless man accused of stealing air conditioners from a Champaign business has been charged with felony theft.

Paul D. Shaw, 27, is accused of stealing air conditioners from Hadley Food Service, 51 Chester St., C.

According to a Champaign police report, on Tuesday, the business owner and his wife found Shaw trying to take an air conditioner from the back of a truck at their business. He ran when they threatened to call police.

On Thursday morning, they discovered two air conditioners missing from the back of the truck parked at their business.

Champaign police contacted Marco Recycling and were told that Shaw had brought in an air conditioner to recycle at the close of business on Wednesday. Marco employees told him to leave it and come back the next morning for the money. Police arrested him Thursday.

Judge John Kennedy set Shaw's bond at $2,500 and told him to be back in court Aug. 23.
