Urbana police investigate robberies

URBANA — Urbana police investigators are looking into two apparently unrelated armed robberies that happened Wednesday night.

Investigator Shaun Cook said about 5 p.m., a 19-year-old man met with a man with whom he had corresponded on Craigslist about the purchase of a computer.

Cook said the men agreed to meet at the Atrium Apartments in the 1300 block of North Lincoln Avenue. The suspect showed the would-be buyer an Apple iPad and the two agreed to a $300 purchase price.

When the buyer got out his cash, the suspect took the money and the iPad and ran.

He was described as a man in his 20s wearing a dark hat and white T-shirt.

In the other robbery, Cook said a 19-year-old man went to visit a friend at the Rainbow Apartments in the 1000 block of South Smith Road about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday but went to the wrong apartment.

As he was leaving, he was approached by three men, one of whom displayed a gun and demanded money. The victim turned over $20 and the men ran off.

The victim believed he recognized two of the men, Cook said.
